Dear Colleagues,

It is with great enthusiasm that I announce the appointment of Dr. Janusz
Supernak as permanent Chair of the Department of Civil, Construction, and
Environmental Engineering, effective July 1, 2019. This decision is based
on an overwhelming majority vote of the departmental personnel
committee comprised of all tenured and tenure-track faculty in the
department.

To the permanent role, Dr. Supernak brings extensive knowledge and
experience in administrative oversight and decision making, his leadership
will be of great importance during the upcoming review by the Accreditation
Board for Engineering and Technology.

After joining SDSU in 1984, Dr. Supernak was promoted in 1988 to Full
Professor, elected Department Chair in 1992, continued at this post for 18
consecutive years, and since 2014 he has been CCEE Interim Department
Chair. He has lectured at 26 universities, such as Oxford University, Kyoto
University, Delft University of Technology, Nanyang University, Hong Kong
University or IIT Chennai. He was PI on the SD Defense Conversion Project;
Capacity Building World Bank Project for Nangarhar University, Afghanistan;
currently, he coordinates CivE and ConE programs at SDSU-Georgia. As PI, he
has secured over $4M in external funding and was instrumental in obtaining
philanthropic support for 7 endowments for his Department, worth $10M+,
also contributing his own $50K+ endowment donation to SDSU. For the last 27
years he has been Faculty Advisor to the Student Chapter of ASCE, hosting a
record six international, national or regional Civil Engineering
competitions at SDSU, and receiving virtually every year national
recognition for his Chapter and/or himself as Advisor. For his work as a
professor and for his public activities Prof. Supernak has received
numerous awards including the prestigious, second highest in its category,
Officer Cross Medal of Merit from the President of Poland, Aleksander
Kwasniewski in 2002, for promoting American-Polish collaboration.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Supernak in his appointment.
