ABSTRACT:

Mathematical models are essential in a variety of fields. Nowadays, there
are many applications of mathematical models and these are continuously
increasing. One particular topic where mathematical models have been used
is on infectious diseases. In this talk, I will present a mathematical
model that deals with the Chikungunya virus spread. In particular, the
model is used to describe the situation in Colombia at the human population
level. Additionally, I will present some mathematical models used in
virology or biology to deal with different type of viruses, but at the cell
level. We will see that the mathematical approaches are similar but details
vary due to micro and macro levels. The mathematical models help to
understand these biological processes and in some cases forecast future
scenarios. Finally, I will explain some challenges that need to be
addressed concerning uncertainty of the parameters in the aforementioned
mathematical models.
