Dear Colleagues,

In light of the anti-Semitic shootings at Chabad congregation in Poway
yesterday, please note and forward these two events below--Monday morning
and Wednesday noon--to relevant folks. It would be great to have a good
turnout for both events.

Best,

Anne

Dear Cal Community,

Thanks so much to those of you who reached out to me personally and
publicly since the horrible events at Chabad Poway yesterday morning.

Friends of mine and of my 18 year-old son were attending services there as
events unfolded. They are still processing their trauma.

My thoughts are with the family and friends of Lori Gilbert Kaye ז׳׳ל who
lost her life while at prayer on the last day of Passover, and to the
families of Rabbi Yisrael Goldstein, Alomog Peretz and 8 year-old Noya
Dahan who are recovering in hospital from their injuries.

In a sad coincidence, Lecturer, Rabbi Scott Meltzer, was already scheduled
to speak in our *Understanding Evil* class (RELS/HUM 411) to discuss modern
anti-Semitism in the post-Holocaust world. In light of the tragedy
yesterday, Dr. Angela Feres and Rabbi Meltzer have agreed to open up the
lecture to all faculty/students. We will be in *Storm Hall West 11, Monday
morning from 9-9:50am*. There are about 120 open seats in the hall—I
believe it would be meaningful if we could fill the room to learn together.

Additionally, the *Jewish Studies Program* is planning a *Silent Vigil of
Solidarity* to be held on *Wednesday May 1st (Yom HaShoah, Holocaust
Remembrance Day) at Noon in the courtyard outside Scripps Cottage*.

Please come together as a community of colleagues and friends to stand with
us to silently show our solidarity and rejection of all hate and violence.
Additional details to follow shortly.

Finally, I close with one of the most touching quotations I’ve encountered
over the last terrible day, from Rabbi Jeffery Meyers of the Tree of Life
Congregation in Pittsburgh; “The words of ‘never again’ have disappeared
from my language. They’ve been replaced with ‘yet again.’ And so it is that
we stand here, yet again, at this corner, as one united community.”

Sincerely,

Risa
