Subject: University Environment & Safety (E&S) Committee: request for inputs

==============================================================

Dear faculty and staff colleagues,

 For some years now, I have been serving on the E&S committee. The Senate webpage lists the focus areas of the committee as

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

*	policies and procedures on the health, safety, and learning conditions of the campus environment (to include: sidewalks, walkways, and pedestrian malls; classrooms, laboratories, and work areas); and restrooms, stairwells, elevators, and hallways)
*	investigation of such problems/issues as health, hazardous materials and waste, safety, emergency preparedness, excessive noise or traffic, and other matters that detrimentally affect the campus environment

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The committee works with and provides guidance to other entities on campus such as the transportation committee (for example, on bike sharing), SDSU sustainability, Emergency Services, Associated Students. In the recent past, the committee was involved in shaping the campus smoke-free policy.

The committee’s priority areas for the 2018-2019 calendar year are included below:

· -Work to increase safety for pedestrians on campus, especially individuals with disabilities, e.g. in relation to bicycle lanes, skateboards, and other issues

· -Increase student, faculty and staff awareness of campus resources to enhance personal safety and to advocate for safe behaviors

· -Continue providing feedback on campus emergency preparedness and evacuation, with a focus on outreach to individuals with disabilities

· -Support best practices for recycling and work towards a mandate for the University, campus entities, and contracts to use recycled products

 In recent semesters, the issue of emergency preparedness wrt gun violence, and sexual assault prevention have come up briefly, but with no follow-through.

The purpose of this email is to request your inputs/suggestions: If there are any issues you feel are of importance (and that will affect the “campus environment”), please let me know by email (please do not send a group email) and I will pass on your suggestions/concerns/recommendations to the committee.

Kind regards,Sridhar
