Subject: Deny Clemency to the Killer of Deana Alonso's Husband
Dear Colleagues,
Before I joined the faculty at Southwestern College, I was a working
journalist. One of the most horrific things I ever wrote about was the
senseless murder of three engineering professors at San Diego State
University, including the husband of SWC Professor of Spanish Deana
Alonso-Lyrintzis. Dr. Costa Lyrintzis was a brilliant engineer, caring
professor, doting father and loving husband. He was a sweet man who loved
his family, his students and his Chula Vista community. He and two other
young professors were murdered in one of their own classrooms by a deranged
graduate student who hid a gun in the room prior to the meeting so that he
could ambush them. Ironically, the three professors had good news for him
that terrible morning -- they were going to approve him for a Master's
degree.
Prosecutors at the time felt they had an excellent chance to have the
murderer executed. Deana and the other two widows agreed not to press for
the death penalty in exchange for a promise by the prosecutors that the
killer would serve three consecutive life sentences and never be released
from prison. The killer accepted that deal. This week Deana and her
daughter Sofia Lyrintzis learned that the killer of their husband and
father has applied for executive clemency. I support the petition to Gov.
Brown (link below) asking that he deny clemency. I support my colleague
Deana Alonso who has already suffered the violent loss of her husband. She
and the other widows and their children should never have to suffer the
release of this killer.
Respectfully,
Max Branscomb

Constantinos Lyrintzis! · Change.org
Dear colleagues,
Would you distribute to faculty and staff on my behalf? I have no words to
describe my horror at this news... my daughter and I received a letter from
the District Attorney letting us know about the plea for clemency from the
killer of my husband and another 2 professors.
Please help us to make Governor Brown realize that it would be a
devastating blow to the victims and our Community to allow clemency to the
man who killed our beloved professors at SDSU in 1996.
Thank you!!
