*DATE: * Friday, March 24th, 2017

*TITLE:* Disordered Granular Chains

*TIME: * 3:30 PM

*LOCATION: * GMCS 314

*SPEAKER:* Dr. Mason Porter, Department of Mathematics, UCLA

*ABSTRACT: *Granular crystals are tightly packed arrangements of solid
particles that deform on contact with each other. In this talk, I will give
an introduction to granular crystals, and I will then discuss my recent
work --- theoretical, computational, and experiment --- with collaborators
on the propagation and scattering of nonlinear waves in disordered
one-dimensional granular crystals. I will consider both low-disorder and
high-disorder chains and will explore nonlinear analogs of Anderson-like
phenomena.

*HOST:* Dr. Ricardo Carretero

*NOTE:* This will be a joint CSRC/Math Colloquium.
