The College of Engineering Newsletter
October 2015 Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences (EIS) Complex *Dean's
Message*
We are half way through the Fall 2015 semester and the College of
Engineering is buzzing with excitement. In just a few weeks, we will be
breaking ground for the $90M Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences
(EIS) Complex. Engineering is the fastest growing discipline at San Diego
State University. Our enrollment has reached its peak at 3,878. We welcomed
759 new first-time Freshmen, 248 new transfer undergraduate students, and
169 new graduate students. Our students continue to place high in national
and international competitions.
We also welcomed two new department chairs and four new faculty all with
outstanding qualifications. In addition, searches are underway for eight
more faculty positions. In parallel with increasing enrollment, the
research awards to the Engineering faculty increased by 16% in 2014-15.
Engineering faculty continue to excel in their fields and receive national
and international recognition.
Our friends, alumni and advisory board members are stepping up, more than
ever before, to help us achieve our goals by generously donating their
time, expertise, and gifts for endowed chairs, scholarships, and the EIS
Complex.
Please take a moment to go over our Fall 2015 newsletter and share our
excitement about the achievements of the College of Engineering students
and faculty.

with Kilpatrick, Townsend & Stockton, LLP, is focused on student mentoring,
leadership and curriculum issues.
The Industry Partners Committee, co-Chaired by Pedro Orso-Delgado, former
City Manager for the City of Santee and Frank Flores, VP of Engineering for
Global Products at Northrop Grumman, are working to improve industry and
College relations through coordination of research and internship programs.
And, David Barach, Principal Partner at Cepheus Capital Partners is
directing the Development Committee which is seeking to spread the reach of
the University to alumni and industry friends, focused on the new
Engineering and Interdisciplinary Sciences Building.
This Board is active and engaged, with big plans and big programs in the

*The Associated Engineering Students Council (AESC) Representative*
Anachristina Morino and SDSU alumae, Diane Denkler, '62.
*Anachristina Morino, the AESC representative* is a 4th year Aerospace
Engineering student with a Minor in Business Management. Diane Denkler, the
first female to graduate from the College of Engineering at SDSU, offers
Anachristina guidance and inspiration.
"I have been able to take on any obstacle I face and continue doing the
things I love. She taught me that combing passion with hard work, is what
makes a female successful in the male dominated field of engineering.
I have been able to succeed in my classes and balance my time for all my
activities, all while still managing to get enough sleep, thanks to Diane."
Annachristina Morino and SDSU alumnus, Jordan Evans, '93.
This past summer, SDSU students along with Alumni, participated in the the
JPL Summer Internship Program which offers a 10-week, full-time, summer
internship opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing
degrees in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
As part of their internships, students are partnered with JPL scientists or
engineers, who serve as the students' mentors. Students complete designated
projects outlined by their mentors, gaining educational experience in their
fields of study while also contributing to NASA and JPL missions and
science.
Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of
enrichment activities, including tours, lectures and career advisement,
arranged by the JPL Education Office.

The groundbreaking for the new EIS Complex which will fuel SDSU's drive to
become a top-50 public research university will take place on November 6,
2015. The facility will double the College's teaching space and will
enhance the current research capacities of the Colleges of Engineering and
Science. It will also boost SDSU's ability to attract the best and
brightest graduate students and researchers.
The complex will house state-of-the-art research laboratories for renewable
energy systems, biomedical engineering, and wireless communications. It
will also house several interdisciplinary research and entrepreneurship
centers including the Viromics Institute, the Smart Health Institute, and
an imaging laboratory for brain research.
The construction of the EIS Complex will be completed in Fall 2017.
