Greetings College of Engineering Faculty and Staff,

A Microsoft Windows Domain ("Domain") is a set of computer workstations
that utilize a central database for storing user account information, as
well as configuration resources for shared printers and computer
security policies. The primary benefit of placing workstations in a
Domain is it allows a user to login to any workstation that is a member
of the domain, using the same username and password. Such a benefit is
a practical necessity for students who require access to workstations
that reside in instructional computer laboratories. The primary Domain
in the College of Engineering has been the one named "ENGINEERING2".
The college has recently acquired a new Dell M1000e "blade server" that
will provide all of you with increased workstation performance. The
M1000e provides a more flexible and scalable architecture than
individual rack-mounted servers, and reduces the complexity involved in
administering a domain. This semester, the IT staff created a new
Domain named simply "ENGINEERING" (absent the number '2') that is
running on the new M1000e. IT staff members are now in the process of
migrating workstations in the college from the older "ENGINEERING2"
domain to the new "ENGINEERING" domain. Account credentials
(i.e. usernames and passwords) are not compatible across the two
domains, so faculty, staff, and students will need to obtain new
credentials to login to the "ENGINEERING" domain. Faculty and staff can
obtain "ENGINEERING" domain credentials by sending a request to
helpdesk at engineering.sdsu.edu. Students can obtain new credentials from
the College of Engineering Student Computing Help Desk located in
Engineering Room 223, weekdays, between the hours of 8:00AM and 4:00PM.
The migration plan is to convert, first, workstations residing in
dedicated computer laboratories (ENG-220, ENG-221, ENG-301, and PS-231),
then workstations residing in research laboratories, then individual
faculty and staff stations. Students who discover their existing
"ENGINEERING2" domain credentials have expired will only be given
credentials in the new ENGINEERING" domain. This may pose a problem for
students who require access to research laboratory workstations that
still reside in the "ENGINEERING2" domain. If you are a faculty member
and you find a student can no longer access a workstation in your
research lab because the workstation is in the "ENGINEERING2" domain and
the student has "ENGINEERING" domain credentials, please email
helpdesk at engineering.sdsu.edu and an IT staff member will resolve the
issue. If you have any questions or concerns regarding either Windows
domain used in the College of Engineering, please send me email or call
x4-7159 and I will be glad to answer any of your questions.

Sincerely yours,

Chris
