TITLE: Drag and Lift Forces in Granular Media
TIME: 11 am
LOCATION: E 323L (3rd Floor Engineering)
SPEAKER: Dr. Francois Guillard. University of Sydney
Abstract:
We study the forces experienced by a cylinder moving perpendicular to
gravity in a granular medium. The horizontal cylinder is rotated around the
vertical axis and the forces in the direction of the flow (drag) and
perpendicular to the flow (lift) are measured experimentally. On the first
half rotation, before the cylinder travels again its own wake, a strong
lift force is measured, about 20 times the buoyancy of the cylinder. The
scaling laws of this force are studied experimentally and compared with the
prediction of recently proposed granular rheology in a continuous framework
using finite element method simulations. After several rotations and
several passings of the cylinder in its wake, an unexpected phenomenon
arises.
