Subject: SDSU Laboratory Fume Hood Calibration and Annual Certification -

Good afternoon all, 

EH&S has contracted with a vendor to perform the annual laboratory fume hood
certification at SDSU.  All laboratory fume hoods on campus will need to
undergo annual comprehensive testing and certification in compliance with
Cal OSHA requirements (CA Code of Regulations, Title 8:General Industry,
Sec. 5154.1).  Technical Safety Services, Inc. (TSS) will be performing the
tests and certification during January 13-16, 2014. 

 

To facilitate and expedite the testing and certification process, fume hoods
must be cleared of large equipment and items, i.e. large chemical
containers, secondary containers that could impede exhaust through the
baffles of the fume hood.  This clearance must always be in place to
maintain the certification and ensure proper performance of laboratory
chemical fume hoods. 

Tests will include the following: 

*	Inflow velocity profiling - assures that a safe inflow is maintained
to protect the operator from the product. 
*	Airflow smoke testing - provides a qualitative analysis of air
capture at the face of the unit, thus demonstrating the unit's exposure
prevention effectiveness. 
*	Calibration of airflow monitors - testing of airflow monitors.

The certification vendor does not schedule exact days/times of when they
will certify each fume hood during this period since that is dependent on
numerous factors (i.e.-accessibility to rooms, the contractor's work load,
any unexpected delays, etc.)  Each fume hood will take approximately 15-20
minutes to test and certify.
