Subject: Invitation: USC PSOC Short Course, Monday, October 17, 2011 (Free
event)

Greetings,

On behalf of the USC Physical Sciences in Oncology Center (PSOC), we would
like to extend an invitation to your students, faculty and researchers, to
attend our first annual short course focused on a physical sciences approach
to understanding cancer. The USC PSOC short course is scheduled for Monday,
October 17, 2011 at the USC Davidson Conference Center, located at the main
campus (3415 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90089). There is no
cost to attend this short course. However, registration is required and
space is limited. Please disseminate the attached flyer to interested
students, faculty, and researchers within your institution.

This is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a fundamental understanding of
various disciplines and their relation to cancer. As the day is meant to
be significantly pedagogic to a diverse audience, our speakers/lecturers
will be presenting their latest scientific results and providing significant
background and highlighting emerging problems for the whole field.

This course is sponsored by our USC Physical Sciences in Oncology Center,
which was selected by NCI/NIH as one of twelve PSOC research centers in the
nation. The overall goals of the center are to take new, non-traditional
approaches to cancer research by studying the physical laws and principles
of cancer; evolution and evolutionary theory of cancer; information coding,
decoding, transfer and translation in cancer; and ways to de-convolute
cancer's complexity. In addition, we have been charged to encourage
widespread collaboration and to build a new generation of scientists to lead
these transdisciplinary efforts.

The goals of the short course include bringing together students across
diverse levels from undergraduates through faculty to:

1) introduce attendees to potential collaborators and like-minded
researchers spanning diverse disciplines

2) introduce attendees to this emerging area of research, as well as to
give a quick booster on important problems and perspectives

3) stimulate discussion around novel approaches, based in the physical
sciences to tackle significant problems in oncology

Topic areas include:

Session I - Cancer Biology and the Cancer Genome

Session II - The Physicist Perspective on Cancer

Session III - Novel Measurement Platforms & Data Management & Integration

Session IV - Creativity in Research at the Interface between Life and
Physical Sciences

This is a full day event beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 8:00 p.m.
Continental breakfast and lunch with be provided for registered attendees.
Additionally, we will have a reception and poster session in the evening
from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. For more information regarding this event, please
contact Kristina Gerber at 323-442-3849 or kgerber at usc.edu. Registration is
now available at http://bit.ly/USCPSOC2011shortcourse
